Embedded Software Engineer
Consumer Electronics & Applied AI

Embedded Software Engineer / Consumer Electronics & Applied AI
Helbling Technik works as an engineering services partner: we develop products in-house for our client's projects. Our multidisciplinary project teams bring together hardware, software, and mechanical engineers to deliver complete solutions. This role centers on two core focus areas: developing embedded software on System-on-Module (SoM) platforms from various providers, and applying AI on embedded devices. You will work on consumer electronics, smart home, and smart devices built for mass production, with or without connectivity.
Role Description
You take embedded software from architecture to deployment, working closely with electronics and mechanical colleagues throughout. Concretely:
- Contribute to embedded software architecture and design within multidisciplinary project teams
- Implement firmware and software for microcontrollers and System-on-Modules (SoM) based consumer electronics products, across bare-metal and RTOS environments
- Work with SoMs from various providers (e.g., Kontron, Toradex), including embedded Linux
- Integrate connectivity stacks (BLE, Wi-Fi, Zigbee/Thread)
- Apply AI on embedded platforms: deploy pre-trained models for on-device inference (edge AI / Ti-nyML), integrate vendor AI/NPU SDKs for features such as voice, gesture, or presence detection, and structure sensor data pipelines feeding AI or cloud systems
- Write and execute unit, integration, and system-level tests
- Debug issues across the hardware/software boundary, perform root cause analysis
- Prepare technical documentation: requirements, design notes, test reports
- Collaborate directly with customer engineering teams as part of project delivery
- Work independently on assigned projects, with mentorship from senior engineers
Professional Qualifications
- BSc or MSc in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
- Minimum three years of professional experience in embedded software development
- Strong C/C++ programming skills on embedded systems
- Python programming skills
- Practical experience with RTOS and/or bare-metal environments
- Experience with embedded Linux (e.g., Yocto) on SoM platforms
- Experience integrating connectivity stacks (e.g., BLE, Wi-Fi, Zigbee/Thread)
- Hands-on experience applying AI on embedded platforms
- Nice to have
- electronics knowledge (analog/digital circuits, reading schematics)
- knowledge of product compliance/safety standards (e.g., IEC 60335 or equivalent)
- experience with specific edge AI frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow)
- experience using LLM-assisted coding tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude Code) in a development workflow
- knowledge in RUST programming language
- Work independently, open to mentorship from senior engineers
- Clear communicator across disciplines and with customers
- Curious, adapts quickly to new technologies
- Fluent in English is required, German is a plus
