Environmental Assessment of Thousands of Products -
Siemens RED

Siemens Smart Infrastructure is a global division of Siemens AG focused on intelligent, connected infrastructure across buildings, energy, industry and mobility.
Through the DEGREE initiative, the goal is to measurably improve the environmental performance of all products by 2030. With the Robust Eco-Design (RED) project, Siemens Smart Infrastructure aims to systematically analyse its portfolio of over 20,000 products and report emissions in the form of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).
As part of this ambitious undertaking, Helbling was commissioned to help structure the product portfolio into Homogeneous Product Families (HPFs) according to EN 50693. Based on this structure, the results of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) according to ISO 14040/44 can be scaled to other products within the same HPF. This significantly reduces the effort required to generate an EPD for each individual product.
Key Figures
- Definition of homogeneous product families according to EN 50693
- Simplified LCA to group products efficiently
- Tool for efficient processing of available product data
- Automated report generation for each product family

Our Contribution
Helbling initially developed a structured process for defining these homogeneous product families based on the data and resources available at Siemens. The process was tested and refined with different product groups and applied across the entire portfolio.
The final process enables efficient evaluation of large data sets and groups products using simplified emission calculations. As a result, a cockpit is generated for each HPF, containing all relevant information for proving the scalability of the LCA results and ensuring a successful certification of the environmental declaration.
Services provided:
- Derivation of requirements and specifications for HPFs
- Development of the process for HPF creation
- Application of the process across the full portfolio
- Development of an Excel tool for data evaluation, including a PDF document

Outcome
Thanks to the robust HPF process, product families can be efficiently created, updated, and summarised in a clear document with just a few steps.
This allows LCA results to be easily scaled, significantly reducing the effort required to prepare EPDs by 80%.
